On Friday night, May 9th, at AmRhein Wine Cellars (Thanks, Russ!), the First Annual Concert for a Clean Valley was a resounding success. With less than a month between conception and reality, the Concert, a benefit for the educational programs at the Clean Valley Council, attracted over 50 environmentally-conscious attendees. The effort was enhanced, no doubt, by the willingness of Virginia’s 6th District Congressional hopeful Sam Rasoul (D) and the Star City’s youngest Council member-elect Court Rosen (D) to support the event and to speak a few words to the audience about their respective visions of the importance of environmental issues in the November election and in the day-to-day work of Roanoke’s City Council. On Monday or Tuesday of this week, we will know how much money we raised for the Clean Valley Council through the combined efforts of the following friends and sponsors of this event.

The Star City Harbinger is grateful to Beth and Wendy at myscoper.com. Beth and Wendy were crucial in the effort to promote this event and designed a beautiful web-based advertisement which linked the thousands of visitors to myscoper.com to the Harbinger’s information page regarding the event.
We are also deeply indebted to Joanne and Steve Villars of Blacksnake Meadery. Joanne helped coordinate the event, worked tirelessly to promote the cause, and, together with Steve who was one of our bartenders for the evening, donated cases of their fantastic mead and bee brew to make the event a success.
A huge thanks is due Mike Mitchell and his compilation band, Floyd County, for providing the music and audio equipment for the event at a significantly reduced cost and for donating copies of his CD for door prizes.
Dr. Rita Bishop, RCPS Superintendent
The Episcopal Diocese of Southwest Virginia
Eco-Brokers and all-around fun couple, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Dandridge of Roanoke, VA

While Wishneff was playing the victim for the mainstream media, Rosen was taking a moment to visit what should be the focus of the future Council’s first order of business. “I consistently maintained throughout the campaign that this area is the lifeblood of the City, and it should be our top priority in the coming months.” The City Council affirmed its meager budget on Thursday, and it appears that the monumental changes entertained by the current Council may be a fleeting memory. One thing everyone running for office this season can agree on is the need to invest in our Downtown and Market Street infrastructure.
Right or Wrong, this is the Hillary Rodham Clinton of 2008. Unfortunately, she “must” win at all costs, she will throw everything including the kitchen sink, and the damage to the Democratic Party is secondary to her personal compass. She must sub-consciously assume that all will be forgiven after the primary battles over, just like the “dining room table debates” of youth. If you don’t like it, lump it! She learned to give no quarter, and stand her ground. She is driven to win at all costs. One senses that Bill Clinton has just been a side-show in her life. It has always been about Hillary’s ambitions, and Hugh Rodham.
In an amazing show of bipartisan support, Democratic Senate hopeful Mark Warner, former Governor of the Commonwealth, was introduced today by Heywood Fralin, the Star City’s Democratic Mayor Nelson Harris, and our School Board President David Carson.

You’ve heard about global warming’s dire environmental threats - from melting ice caps and drowning polar bears to stronger storms and coastal flooding. But what about threats to our own families? Are we prepared?
